The Scottish Thistles Women had a great weekend in Belgium. A really wonderful and well-organised tournament hosted by the Belgian Panthers at Namur HC (the oldest club in Belgium). Hospitality from the Belgians was second to none, with a fantastic Gala Dinner in a classic venue in the City, and local entertainment (folk dancing and battles on tall stilts on the concrete!). All the matches were very closely contested with only the odd goal separating the sides. Thistles 2s (the O60s) "The Lassies", won the tournament being unbeaten throughout, winning the final on penalty strokes against England LX 3. The Thistles 1 (the O65s) "The Wifies", having played competitive and close games, only losing 1-0 to the eventual finalists LX 3 in the group game, were placed 8th losing a last minute goal in the play-off against the Panthers O55s. Overall a very successful weekend blessed with excellent weather!!
This was the first ever women-only tournament supported by the WGMA, and was set up by the Belgian Panthers in collaboration with England LX - teams involved Belgian Panthers Over 55s, 60s and 65s, England LX (3 sides), Wales and 2 sides from the Scottish Thistles. Long may it continue!
